Today on the blog I wanted to do a more business oriented post. As many fellow entrepreneurs know, branding and design play a HUGE role in how your prospective clients view your overall brand image. The industry standard of going about creating a brand and creating graphics is usually to hire a graphic designer to create your brand/do that work for you. However, as entrepreneurs we are in this game to #1 do what we love, but let's not forget about #2 which is to make that moola! This means cutting down our overhead to as little as possible, so that we can in turn make a greater profit. Canva, has helped me do exactly that. Obviously if a software is intuitive enough for you to use and accomplish what you need, then you can save money by not hiring some one. Disclaimer, I am by no means trying to say that graphic designers and web designers are not worth their weight in gold. Also, if you really just have NO eye whatsoever for graphic design then you should definitely hire a designer. It's our job as entrepreneurs to determine our strengths and weaknesses, and know when to throw in the towel and hire a professional to do better than we can.
What is Canva?
When I was doing my rebrand I was still in the infancy stage of my business and didn't have anywhere near the money to pay someone to create my brand for me. I had to do the next best thing which was design it all myself. I am by no means a graphic designer, and I haven't the slightest clue on how to use Adobe InDesign like the professionals do to create beautiful and engaging graphics. After doing a little research I found Canva, a free website with easy to use controls and a gorgeous interface. I immediately started playing around with it and I quickly found out just how easy they make it to design with.
Easy to learn, easy to use.
Being a lifetime MAC user, the intuitive features like being able to drag and drop elements to the project, and choose from their professional and diverse selection of fonts made me feel right at home. In no time I was designing things left and right. Posters for my short films. Thumbnail images for my blog post and my clients wedding films. I even created the graphics for my website, my brand, my wedding pricing guide, and the logo for my new brand. The best part is they make it SOOO easy to do all of this. They have templates for blog posts, thumbnails, desktop wallpapers, logos, Instagram posts, you name it!
Ultimately my brand wouldn't have been possible without this amazing little website. It might not be for everyone, like I said some people may be better off hiring some one. If you have a knack for things creative as I figure many of you do in this field of work, then I'm willing to wager that you could use this app effectively when implemented in your business. Maybe it isn't creating your entire brand, but to do your blog thumbnails, and Instagram posts. It will be useful to each person in a different way, but regardless it is a brilliant tool to add to your creative arsenal as a entrepreneur.
If any of you have questions about the app feel free to comment, shoot me an email, or PM on my business page! I am happy to help, plus I'm a bit of a nerd and love tech stuff like this. Click the link below to try if for yourself! I want to know what you guys think.
